Another thing I could have done (looking back) was do a sample of each color using a dip pen. So whatever the medium you are swatching, think about how you use it or what you want to know. That gives me a reference for how the ink looks slightly diluted. Then I rinsed the brush (that part is not visible in the video) and with a tiny bit of water on the brush, I painted the center part of the swatch, pulling the ink from the right side. So with a brush, I painted ink full-strength over the circle and again on the right side. The purpose of the circle (or whatever mark you want to do) is to document the opacity of that particular ink layered over a non-water-soluble black pen. Because I was planning to cut the grid into separate cards, the order didn’t matter in any way! I drew a squiggly circle in black gelly roll (which I knew wouldn’t run/bleed) on the left side of each box. I used a ruler to measure lines 1.5" apart and wrote the names of one ink in each box. The way I made this grid was to draw a grid on watercolor paper. You can always make a little note if something goes awry with one of the colors. When making swatches or color samples, use the same process for each color so that you have results which are comparable and good future reference. I filmed a quick video to show you how I painted ink swatches of Dr. There are a LOT of things that you only discover if you've experimented, tested on different papers/surfaces, and to see how the materials work after the containers have been opened for a bit. So I take the materials for a spin to see what happens. There is much more to know about an art material than what it looks like fresh out of the box. In order to share the most useful information, I only review materials that I really like and that I’ve used for at least 6 months. Kind of like unused nail polish, how some colors separate and sometimes you can get them to remix and sometimes not. Could be the nature of this kind of pigment based ink. Various sites state that this ink can be used in a technical pen but I’m not adept at cleaning my fountain pens thoroughly and my concern would be that I would ruin some pens. Regular black charcoal – great for rough sketches. However, thousands of painters still use this method! H-grade pencil is the easiest yet the least favorite method, as graphite can get messy and visible through the paint. □ Water-soluble graphite pencil – great for not leaving marks with acrylics or watercolor.□ White charcoal pencil – great for sketches on toned or black canvases.Helps to transfer all details and dimensions, and move the drawing around. □ Transfer paper – the best method to sketch on canvas and most used by pro acrylic and oil painters.UPFRONT: 11 Methods how to draw on canvas before painting it with Acrylic Paintį or NOT retaining the sketch and painting over it: 101 Easy Acrylic Painting Ideas for Beginners on Canvas.38 Best Canvas for Acrylic Painting for Beginners in 2023 that Professionals use.If you really would like to develop drawing skills, I would absolutely recommend trying sketching, as well as watching videos on the painting process. However, I do most of my works in abstract. Personal opinion: I do simple sketches very rarely if I’m copying a painting or painting a tricky landscape. So grab a canvas and some paint, and give it a try! I think you’ll love the results. This is a great way to get started with painting, and it will help you to make sure that your final product is exactly what you want it to be. Once you have the basic colors down, you can start working on the details. Remember that normally we paint dark to light with acrylics but it’s not mandatory. If you’re not sure what colors to use, try looking at some reference photos or paintings that you like. Once you have your sketch, you can start painting! Begin by adding the base colors for your composition. Either way, it’s important to get your ideas down on paper (or canvas) before you start painting if you are not comfortable with free hands painting. This can be a simple outline of the overall composition, or it can be a more detailed drawing of the individual elements. To begin, you will need to sketch your design for the painting on canvas. However, you can do it to ease the process and trace some important proportions or compositions – the sketch is your preliminary drawing. To be honest I’ve never sketched in detail before painting and there is no rule that you absolutely must do it. Should You sketch on a canvas before painting? On, for example, Dark Reader makes the menu items white, while Night Eye turns the menu items purple. Dark Reader is a free, open source extension, while Night Eye offers both a limited-feature free edition, Night Eye Lite, and full-featured paid edition, Night Eye Pro.įigure B On sites that neither auto-adapt nor offer a Dark Theme setting, third-party extensions apply different defaults to make pages dark. The different extensions also turn the title and subtitle text slightly different shades, too.īoth extensions allow for some customization, so if you don’t like the default adjustments, you may make changes. The default settings for each produce slightly different color schemes.įor example, on a TechRepublic page from an earlier article, Dark Reader turned the navigation menu items a shade of white ( Figure B, top right), while Night Eye turned the same items a shade of purple ( Figure B, bottom right). Both extensions attempt to transform Light Theme pages into Dark Theme ones. Third-party Chrome extensions, such as Dark Reader or Night Eye, offer to deliver dark mode on every site you visit. Because this setting obscures content, most people will find this option to be unusable. For example, traditional black text in a Google Doc remains dark, as do some menus in Gmail. However, as of August 2022, this setting doesn’t adjust dark text on pages to be readable. When you do, every web page you open should display using a Dark Theme. If you change the setting to enable, you’ll need to select the Restart button to apply the change. One potential way to darken this sort of site is with a flag found in ChromeOS 104: Type chrome://flags in the browser, then search for Auto Dark and locate the Auto Dark Mode For Web Contents setting. For example, Google Docs and TechRepublic both display only with a Light Theme. However, many sites lack either an auto-applied dark mode or a selectable Dark Theme. How to use a Chrome extension to make sites dark For more details, see my earlier article titled How to achieve (mostly) dark mode on a Chromebook: 4 tips. For example, select the sprocket | View all | Dark | Save to apply a Dark Theme to Gmail on the web. Other sites, such as Gmail, let you apply a site-specific theme. Other sites, such as Google (on the right), offer a setting that may be manually changed. Want Google search to display with a Dark Theme? You’ll need to go to, select Settings in the lower-right corner, as shown in Figure A on the right, then adjust the option to Dark Theme: On.įigure A Some sites, such as YouTube (on the left), can use the device theme. As of August 2022, your ChromeOS Dark Theme setting is completely disconnected from the search theme. Google Search offers what might be best called a simple switch: Dark Theme on Dark Theme off. That’s helpful, since many people may prefer a Light Theme for ChromeOS with a Dark Theme for YouTube videos. You may manually change the theme, however, if you prefer a different theme than ChromeOS. Select Light Theme for ChromeOS and YouTube will display in Light Theme, too.Īccess these by selecting your Google account | Appearance, then choose from Use Device Theme, Dark Theme or Light Theme settings. The best sites auto-detect the system themeĪs of August 2022, YouTube settings act exactly as you might hope. In the meantime, here’s a look at several options available to achieve a Dark Theme on ChromeOS. Google’s teams still have a significant amount of work to do to ensure that every Google-owned site respects your ChromeOS Dark Theme selection. However, even after you select the Dark Theme, not every site - and not even every Google-owned site - reflects your selection. When you make the change, the theme of the shelf and settings adjusts immediately. Select the Dark Theme option to toggle the setting between Off and On. To access the Dark Theme setting in ChromeOS, click on the shelf where the battery status, time and Wi-Fi indicator display. That’s a useful change from late 2020, when you needed to select a custom browser theme as part of efforts to achieve a similar appearance. The shelf, launcher, browser tabs and omnibox all switch to a Dark Theme. Google includes a Dark Theme setting in ChromeOS Version 104, which, when turned on changes many interface elements from a light to dark. ChromeOS Version 104 adds a dark theme setting, but you’ll need to take additional actions if you want a consistent dark theme experience on every site. The most powerful thing Git allows us to do, is propose changes to content in a distributed and safe way. More on this ‘Asynchronous’ idea in a moment. Many software engineers use GitHub already, live in the tool often, and it enables more distributed asynchronous communication and collaboration on proposing and managing changes to content. There have been several companies that have started to try to make Git easier to use, from Github, Bitbucket, and others. We can track progress, keep records of conversations, and use these not just to negatively manage under performance, but also help with coaching, growth and ultimately career management. An employee, would probably also benefit from being able to have a copy or dossier of all the manager to employee conversations as well. Now - without getting too nerdy here, these are also some key qualities a manager needs when communicating with an employee that reports to them on a number of topics such as goal setting, coaching, onboarding, and role definition. Git helps us keep track of who made each revision, what the revision specifically included, any notes associated with a revision, and when they did it. Git also provides us ways to merge those independent copies together so all revisions end up in one place. So Git is under the covers is a really complex tool, but we can ignore most of that right now - what is important, is that it is a tool that allows people to securely keep independent copies of files, and each revision made to them. There have been many, but one in particular has recently become the primary tool used, and it’s called Git A Complex Tool Called Git In software engineering we call this a Version Control System. In simple we need to track changes, and revisions to files so we can allow one or multiple people to iterate towards the end result they want, knowing they may even need to come back much later and revisit and pick up the process again. There are many ways to approach this problem, but Software Engineers have come up with an approach and some tooling that’s worked well for them. At worst, this is done mentally from memory, but in larger or more complex operations we choose to often write these things down, edit them, get them reviewed, and eventually publish one of that work for general consumption. We do this knowing situations will change, and so we keep running records of what changes are impacting the business, and the decisions that those result in. This problem is also present in management, we need to describe process, and manage expectations with a number of people. We may need to even revisit, and edit again, and then publish a newer version while keeping a copy of the older copies as well. It has a lot of generally similar challenges to say, an author, politician, or a newspaper reporter, in that we need to write content, edit it, get it reviewed, and eventually publish one of the versions of that work for customer consumption. Put very simply a Software Developer’s job is to edit text files, which include instructions for computers to do work. Git and it’s workflows allow for publishing, editing, and collaborating on text. A more natural option for a developer is to use the tool they use often, Git. I’ve seen managers use Google Docs, Word files, spreadsheets and more. On this November day, a heavy-duty vehicle transported OPTIMISM from a JPL test lab to the Mars Yard garage. “Drill into the rock, collect the core sample, and now we have the mechanism responsible to cache that sample in the cylinder.”Īnd if problems arise on Perseverance on Mars, OPTIMISM can be used as a platform to figure out what went wrong and also how to fix it. “Now we can do it end-to-end in the test bed,” said the Vehicle System Ted Bed systems engineering lead, Jose G. Some or all of these initial samples could be among those returned to Earth by a future mission. The assembly on Perseverance is responsible for storing rock and sediment samples. And while the team has already performed tests using the coring drill at the end of OPTIMISM’s robotic arm, they’ll be testing the newly installed Adaptive Caching Assembly for the first time in the Mars Yard. Download image ›īut it recently received some key updates to match features available on Perseverance, including additional mobility software and the bulk of the exquisitely complex sample caching system. 29, 2021, a heavy-duty vehicle transports the Perseverance rover’s engineering model, called OPTIMISM, from a test lab to the Mars Yard garage at JPL. OPTIMISM first rolled out into the Mars Yard in September 2020, when it conducted mobility tests. In each case, a rover double has scaled slopes, dodged obstacles, or helped rover planners puzzle out new paths on the simulated patch of Mars. It works.”Ībout as long as a doubles tennis court and twice as wide, the Mars Yard has served as a testing ground for many a fully-engineered rover twin – from the engineering model of the very first, tiny Sojourner that landed on Mars in 1997 to the Spirit and Opportunity missions that began in 2004 to the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers exploring Mars today. We’ve done so much testing on the ground we can be confident in it. What we have safely traversed around here has informed rover drivers in planning their traverses on Mars. “We test a lot of that, figure out what kinds of things to avoid. “The size and shape of rocks in the visual field – will they turn into obstacles or not?” said Bryan Martin, the flight software and test beds manager at JPL. They also could potentially reveal unexpected problems Perseverance might encounter. The tests help ensure that OPTIMISM’s twin on Mars can safely execute the commands sent by controllers on Earth. OPTIMISM Ready for Testing : OPTIMISM faces a doorway of JPL’s Mars Yard garage shortly after arriving there on Oct. Short for Operational Perseverance Twin for Integration of Mechanisms and Instruments Sent to Mars, OPTIMISM is more generically known as a vehicle system test bed, and the recently upgraded rover begins testing out new equipment for the first time this month. OPTIMISM, a twin of the Perseverance rover that is exploring Jezero Crater on Mars, will perform a crucial job in the weeks ahead: navigating the Mars Yard’s slopes and hazards, drilling sample cores from boulders, and storing the samples in metal tubes – just like Perseverance is doing in its hunt for signs of ancient microbial life. And the landscape was a boulder-strewn mock-up of the real Mars – the Mars Yard at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. But this rover, named OPTIMISM, wasn’t on the Red Planet. On a recent day in November, the car-size rover rolled slowly forward, then stopped, perched on the threshold of a Martian landscape. OPTIMISM, the full-scale engineering model of Perseverance, begins a series of rigorous tests to assess the risk of potential driving hazards on the surface of the Red Planet. The idea was that each of the three dining rooms would offer direct access to a garden, so visitors never felt uprooted from the main attraction. It became a tea room after Huntington’s death in 1928 and underwent many changes over the years in décor and menu at times being used as more of a cafeteria. Plans to renovate, redesign and restore it had been brewing for some time, but the pandemic closure allowed them to start the project, which ultimately cost over $11 million.įarneth said what visitors to the new venue will see is about 50% the original structure, including that fireplace and the tall windows in the main tea room, and 50% new spaces like the herb room and a large rounded terrace nestled against the Shakespeare garden. “It was originally built as Henry Huntington’s billiard room,” he said, sitting by the ornately carved wooden mantle around the fireplace, “with an access to the bowling alley.” The original building dates back to 1911, when architect Stephen Farneth said it was used for a far different purpose. And of course, there is no shortage of fresh floral arrangements, culled from the gardens. The chandeliers were repurposed from the house. There is botanical art work from the Huntington’s collection. Pretty much every detail inside the soon to reopen space is a reflection of the beauty that lies outside its walls. “You feel steeped in history and nature,” Huntington’s President Karen Lawrence said. The blend of indoors and outdoors is at the heart of the redesign. “There’s fennel. There’s flowers that we harvest… We’ll be garnishing the various tiers of sandwiches and whatnot.” “We’ve got bay leaf growing along the back,” he explained, standing in the herb garden that’s next to the structure. He wanted to present a fresh take on all the favorites plus some seasonally selected features to showcase what’s in bloom. His menu for the Tea Room, which reopens on March 24, will be dynamic too. “Without a doubt, it’s a dynamic place,” he said of the Huntington. The building is surrounded by buds and blooms on all sides and executive chef Jeff Thurston said he finds no shortage of inspiration just stepping out of the kitchen. The project cost $11.2 million and was funded through philanthropic gifts.New design features three distinct dining rooms, each adjacent to a garden.Wednesday and can be made up to three months in advance The Huntington's restored and redesigned Rose Garden Tea Room reopens on May 24.*This post has been updated and revised from one that appeared originally in 2017. *Their original location is the one we went to last night, on Broad Street in Pawtuxet Village (Cranston, RI).
